ANCHOR
You've probably assumed God was closer during your best moments than during your worst ones — as if His presence tracked with how good you looked or felt at the time.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there." — Psalm 139:8 (NIV)

TENSION
Notice the symmetry — heavens and depths are named as equally covered, not because they're equally comfortable but because presence doesn't scale with condition. The verse doesn't say “You are there in the heavens, and merely aware of the depths” — same phrase, same certainty, both directions. That symmetry challenges an assumption most of us carry quietly: that closeness to God is tied to how well things are going, that the depths are where He steps back and lets us sort it out alone. “Make my bed in the depths” is a strange phrase, too — it's not a passing visit to a low place, it's staying there, settling in. And even in that settled, extended lowness, presence doesn't waver.
REFLECT
Which of your two extremes — your highest moment or your lowest — have you quietly assumed God was less present in, and why?
PRAYER
I've measured Your nearness by how good things looked, more than I want to admit. Thank You for being just as present in the depths I've settled into as in the heights I've celebrated. I don't want to keep grading Your presence by my circumstances. You are there, either way. Amen.
