ANCHOR

There's a difference between wanting to be pulled out of trouble and actually wanting to become someone who can walk steadily once you're out of it. Most of us default to asking only for the first.

SCRIPTURE TEXT

"Rescue me from my enemies, Lord, for I hide myself in you. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. For your name's sake, Lord, preserve my life." — Psalm 143:9-11 (NIV)

TENSION

Notice the sequence — rescue is asked for first, but it's immediately followed by something more formative: “teach me to do your will... may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” The psalmist isn't satisfied with extraction alone; he wants actual instruction and steady footing going forward, not just an end to the immediate threat. Level ground implies a request about how he'll walk after this, not only about escaping what he's walking through now. And “for your name's sake” reframes the whole request one more time — the psalmist isn't ultimately asking to be preserved because his life matters most to him; he's asking because of what preserving him says about God's own name, God's own reputation for faithfulness. Personal rescue, tucked inside something bigger than the person being rescued.

REFLECT

Are you asking God only to rescue you from what's wrong right now, or also to actually teach you and lead you somewhere steady afterward?

PRAYER

I don't just want out of this — I want to actually learn something You're teaching me in it. Lead me onto level ground once this is over, not back to the same unsteady footing. And preserve me not just because I want to survive, but for the sake of who You are, not just for my own comfort. Amen.
