“Answer me quickly” and “my spirit fails” belong together — this isn't patient waiting on God's timing, it's an honest admission that timing matters, that a slow yes might functionally be a no. The psalmist doesn't apologize for the urgency or spiritualize it away. And “do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit” ties God's responsiveness directly to survival, not just comfort. Then the pivot: “show me the way I should go” — the line this song is named for — comes right in the middle of desperate urgency, not after resolution. Direction is asked for while still in crisis, not only once the crisis has passed. Guidance isn't something you wait to need until you're calm again.
