ANCHOR

When things get bad enough, you start reaching backward — not to escape, but because remembering something real and good feels like the only solid ground left to stand on.

SCRIPTURE TEXT

"I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done. I spread out my hands to you; I thirst for you like a parched land." — Psalm 143:5-6 (NIV)

TENSION

Notice what the psalmist actually remembers — not his own better days, his own past successes or comfort, but God's works, what “your hands have done.” The memory that steadies him isn't nostalgia for his own circumstances; it's recollection of God's specific track record. That's a different kind of remembering than most of us default to when things are hard — we usually mourn what we've lost, not deliberately recall what God has done. And the image that follows is visceral: “I thirst for you like a parched land.” Not a mild desire, an actual physical desperation. The remembering doesn't resolve into calm; it resolves into thirst — need becoming sharper, not softer, the more he considers what God has done before.

REFLECT

What specific thing has God done before that you could deliberately remember today, not to escape the present, but to actually stand on?

PRAYER

I've been remembering what I've lost more than what You've done. Let me spread my hands out to You the way this psalm describes — not in resignation, but in actual thirst. I don't want calm that forgets what's wrong. I want to want You the way parched ground wants rain. Amen.
