ANCHOR

You've been ground down by something ongoing, not a single blow — a pressure that doesn't quit long enough for you to recover between rounds, until your spirit is running on nothing.

SCRIPTURE TEXT

"The enemy pursues me, he crushes me to the ground; he makes me dwell in darkness like those long dead. So my spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed." — Psalm 143:3-4 (NIV)

TENSION

Notice these are body and interior symptoms both — “crushes me to the ground,” “dwell in darkness like those long dead,” and then “my spirit grows faint,” “my heart within me is dismayed.” The psalmist doesn't separate his circumstances from his interior collapse. The oppression isn't just external pressure he's managing while staying composed inside; it has actually gotten in and hollowed him out. That's a more total description of distress than we usually allow ourselves to admit to — most of us try to keep managing appearances even while we're being crushed. And “like those long dead” is a striking phrase — not near death, but already positioned there, as if hope has already been buried before the actual outcome is decided.

REFLECT

Where have you kept managing the appearance of composure while something ongoing has actually hollowed you out on the inside?

PRAYER

I've been pretending I'm handling this better than I am. Something has been grinding on long enough that my spirit actually is faint, not just tired. I don't want to keep performing composure I don't have. Meet me exactly as hollowed out as I actually am right now. Amen.
