ANCHOR
You've made decisions out of scarcity before, not because it was wise, but because the fear of not having enough got loud enough to override everything else.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that... But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness." — 1 Timothy 6:6-8, 11 (NIV)

TENSION
Paul doesn't tell Timothy that wanting more is simply wrong. He diagnoses it specifically as a trap tied to loving money, not to having needs. And notice the instruction isn't “wait until you feel secure, then pursue godliness.” It's “flee... and pursue,” active verbs given in the middle of the same anxiety about not having enough. The contentment described isn't the absence of want; it's genuinely being at peace with “food and clothing,” a much lower bar than what most of our anxiety is actually organized around. That's uncomfortable, because it means the anxious pursuit of more isn't neutral. Paul frames it as something to flee from, not just an understandable impulse to indulge until circumstances improve.
REFLECT
Where has the fear of not having enough been quietly running your decisions, instead of the “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith” Paul actually calls for?
PRAYER
I've let the fear of not having enough drive decisions it had no business driving. I don't want contentment that waits for security to show up first. Teach me what it actually looks like to flee this anxiety and pursue You instead: godliness, faith, love, right where I am, with what I actually have. Provide what I need, not necessarily what I'm afraid of lacking. Amen.
