You've built things you were sure would last, and trusted promises that turned out to have an expiration date you didn't see coming.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever." — Isaiah 40:6-8 (NIV)

TENSION
Notice what Isaiah lumps in with the grass. Not just human effort, but faithfulness itself, the good part, the part we assume should be exempt from decay. Then, without transition or softening, he points to the one thing that doesn't share that fate: God's word. The claim only carries weight because he didn't rush past the part where everything else breaks first. This isn't a warm feeling offered instead of grief. It's a promise made in the same breath as the loss, standing right next to it.
REFLECT
What are you currently resting your security on that this passage would call “grass,” good, but never built to be the foundation?
PRAYER
I've been holding onto things that were never going to last, hoping they'd hold more weight than they were built for. Thank You for being the one thing that doesn't fall when the wind moves through. Let Your word be the ground I actually stand on today, not the things I've been quietly asking to hold me instead. Amen.
