ANCHOR

When you're anxious about what's ahead, you probably scan the wrong horizon for reassurance: other people's opinions, your own preparation, anything you can actually see and measure, before you think to look toward the one place this psalm points.

SCRIPTURE TEXT

"I lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth... The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." — Psalm 121:1-2, 8 (NIV)

TENSION

The psalmist starts by asking a real question, not a rhetorical flourish: where does my help come from? He's genuinely looking, scanning the hills, probably a natural place to expect help or threat in that terrain. And the answer redirects entirely: not the hills themselves, but the Maker of them. Then the psalm ends with a phrase easy to skim past: both now and forevermore. That's not just present-tense comfort. It's a claim about your coming and going in every specific moment ahead, not a single rescue but ongoing watching, spanning both the immediate anxious moment and everything after it you can't yet see.

REFLECT

What horizon have you been scanning for help, that this psalm suggests was never actually the source to look toward?

PRAYER

I've been looking in the wrong direction for reassurance, at circumstances I can control or people I'm hoping will come through. Thank You for being the Maker behind everything I keep scanning instead. Watch over my coming and going today, and over the things I can't see far enough ahead to even be anxious about yet. Amen.
