ANCHOR

There's a particular kind of relief in finally being able to say something you'd hoped was true actually turned out to be true, not just believed on faith anymore, but confirmed.

SCRIPTURE TEXT

"On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast... he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces. In that day they will say, 'Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.'" — Isaiah 25:6-9 (NIV)

TENSION

Notice the tense shift built into this text. Isaiah describes a future feast, future destruction of death, future wiped tears, and then jumps to what people will say once it happens: surely this is our God, we trusted in him, and he saved us. The declaration comes after the trusting, not instead of it. The people in this text spent time simply trusting before they got to say surely with confidence. And what finally gets swallowed up isn't described modestly. Death itself, the thing every other fear in life is downstream from, gone, not managed, not made bearable, actually swallowed.

REFLECT

What have you been trusting God for without yet getting to say “surely,” and how does this text ask you to keep trusting anyway, before the confirmation comes?

PRAYER

I want the surely moment, the confirmation that what I've been hoping was true actually was. But I'm still mostly in the trusting part, before the saying part. Let me trust You fully even now, not waiting for the feast to already believe in the God who's preparing it. This is our God. We are trusting Him. Amen.
