You've probably assumed peace was waiting for you on the other side of your current trouble, that once this particular problem resolved, the anxiety would finally lift for good.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." — John 16:33 (NIV)

TENSION
Notice Jesus doesn't promise the trouble will end. He says “in this world you will have trouble,” stated flatly, as an ongoing fact, not a temporary phase to be endured until circumstances improve. And yet in the very same breath he offers peace and tells them to “take heart.” The peace isn't contingent on the trouble disappearing. It's grounded in something else entirely: “I have overcome the world.” The victory is already accomplished, even while the trouble is still ongoing and unresolved. That's a different kind of peace than we usually chase, not the peace of a solved problem, but the peace of a settled outcome underneath an unsolved one.
REFLECT
What trouble are you currently waiting to end before you'll let yourself have peace, that this verse suggests you don't actually have to wait for?
PRAYER
I've been waiting for this trouble to end before I'd let myself feel any peace. Thank You that You already told me trouble was coming, so this isn't a sign something's gone wrong. Let me take heart today, not because the trouble is over, but because You've already overcome it. Amen.
