ANCHOR
You've faced a situation that felt too far gone to actually hope about, where the practical, reasonable read of the circumstances left no room for anything except loss.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?'" — John 11:25-26 (NIV)

TENSION
Jesus asks Martha this question after Lazarus has already been dead four days, past the point where any reasonable person would still be hoping for a different outcome. He doesn't ask “do you believe I can still fix this” while there's still practical room for it. He asks after the situation has become, by every visible measure, finished. The question isn't really about whether Jesus can help in ambiguous circumstances. It's about whether Martha, and whoever reads this, will trust him specifically at the point where hope stops making rational sense. And notice the claim itself: “the one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” This doesn't promise the avoidance of death or loss. It reframes what death is capable of, for those who believe. The fear isn't dismissed as unfounded. It's answered with something bigger than the fear accounted for.
REFLECT
Where do you need to answer Jesus's exact question, “do you believe this?” about something in your life that currently feels too far gone for hope to make sense?
PRAYER
There's something in my life that feels finished, past the point where hope seems reasonable. You're asking me the same question You asked Martha, and I want to actually answer it, not just avoid it. Yes, I believe You are the resurrection and the life. Meet me at the exact point where my hope ran out. Amen.
