ANCHOR
You've probably tried to simply stop thinking about something anxious, and found that telling yourself not to think about it only made the thought louder.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable... think about such things... And the God of peace will be with you." — Philippians 4:6-9 (NIV)

TENSION
Notice Paul doesn't just say “stop being anxious” and leave it there. He replaces the command with an action: pray, petition, give thanks. Anxiety isn't dealt with by willing it away. It's dealt with by redirecting it toward God, specifically, with gratitude attached even before the outcome is known. And the peace that follows is explicitly described as something that “transcends understanding,” not the product of finally having your questions answered, but a peace that operates even when your circumstances remain confusing or unresolved. Then Paul does something practical and easy to overlook. He tells you what to think about instead: true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable things, because a mind can't simply stop thinking. It can only be redirected toward something else.
REFLECT
What anxious loop are you currently trying to just “stop thinking about,” that might actually need to be redirected toward prayer and something true, rather than willed away?
PRAYER
I keep trying to just stop thinking about this, and it keeps getting louder instead of quieter. Thank You for a peace that doesn't wait until I understand everything first. Help me actually bring this to You instead of just trying to suppress it, and give my mind something true and good to hold onto instead. Be the God of peace with me, right in the middle of this. Amen.
