ANCHOR
You've probably hesitated to bring something to someone because you weren't sure they'd actually understand, that the weakness itself might be met with confusion or judgment instead of empathy.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." — Hebrews 4:15-16 (NIV)

TENSION
The confidence to approach isn't based on God's distance from human weakness. It's based on the opposite: a high priest who has actually been tempted in every way we have. That's a strange kind of qualification for approaching a throne. Ordinarily you'd expect to need to clean yourself up first, present your best case. Instead, the text grounds your confidence in his familiarity with exactly the weakness you're anxious about bringing. And “time of need” doesn't specify what kind of need. It's deliberately broad, covering whatever your actual need happens to be right now, without you first needing to determine whether it qualifies as serious enough.
REFLECT
What have you been hesitant to bring to God's throne, assuming your specific weakness might be the exception to His empathy?
PRAYER
I've held back from approaching You with this, half expecting to be misunderstood instead of met with mercy. Thank You for a high priest who has actually been tempted in every way I have. Let me come with confidence, not because I've cleaned myself up first, but because You already understand exactly what I'm bringing. Give me mercy and grace to help in this, whatever this actually is. Amen.
