You can do a lot of the right things — show up, say the right words, avoid outright cruelty — and still feel like something isn't holding together underneath it.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity." — Colossians 3:14 (NIV)

TENSION
Paul just listed several virtues — compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness — and now adds one more, but describes it differently than the others. Love isn't one item in the list; it's what holds the list together. Without it, all those virtues can exist independently and still not cohere into anything unified. You can be technically patient and technically kind while still fundamentally disconnected from the person in front of you. That's the uncomfortable part: going through the motions of virtue isn't the same as loving someone. You can check every box and still miss the point entirely if love isn't the thing binding it together.
REFLECT
Where have you been practicing the individual virtues — patience, kindness, humility — without the love that's supposed to hold them together?
PRAYER
I've gone through the motions with people I'm supposed to love. I've been patient without being present, kind without really caring. I don't want the appearance of virtue without the thing that actually binds it together. Put love underneath everything I do today, not just the behaviors that look right from the outside. Amen.
