ANCHOR
You've replayed an old argument in your head more times than the original event even lasted. The other person probably doesn't think about it as much as you do.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." — Colossians 3:13 (NIV)

TENSION
Paul doesn't say forgive once the grievance is resolved or once you feel like it. He assumes the grievance is real — “if any of you has a grievance” — he doesn't ask you to pretend you weren't wronged. But the standard he sets isn't proportional forgiveness matched to the offense; it's “as the Lord forgave you” — forgiveness extended before you deserved it, with no scale attached. That's uncomfortable because most of us forgive on a sliding scale — small things easily, big things maybe, some things not at all, keeping a little grievance in reserve just in case. Paul doesn't leave room for the reserve.
REFLECT
What grievance have you filed away as “forgiven” but are still quietly keeping receipts on?
PRAYER
There's someone I say I've forgiven, but I'm still keeping score somewhere underneath it. I don't know how to let go of the receipts I've been holding onto. You forgave me without keeping receipts of Your own. Teach me to forgive the way I've been forgiven — not partway, not with conditions attached. Amen.
