ANCHOR
You've probably watched a darkness — in the world, in a relationship, in your own mind — that seemed completely unmoved by whatever light got thrown at it, until you started to wonder if the dark might just be the more durable thing.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." — John 1:5 (NIV)

TENSION
Notice the verb tense — the light “shines,” present and ongoing, not “shone once” or “will eventually shine.” This isn't a light that flickered briefly against the dark long ago; it's presented as a continuous, current fact. John names this light directly a few verses later: “the true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world” (v9) — meaning this isn't a metaphor floating free of a person. It's Jesus, arriving into the actual dark of a particular time and place. And the text doesn't say the darkness has been eliminated — it says the darkness “has not overcome it.” Darkness is still real, still active, still something you genuinely encounter. But it has not won, and it structurally cannot, not because darkness stopped trying, but because of who this particular light is.
REFLECT
What darkness have you quietly started to assume might eventually win, and what would it mean to actually trust that it structurally cannot?
PRAYER
There's a darkness I've been watching long enough to start doubting the light will actually hold. Thank You that the light doesn't need to eliminate every trace of dark to have already won. Let me trust what shines now, even while the dark is still real around it. Amen.
