ANCHOR
There's satisfaction in pointing to something and saying, “I made that” — a project, a relationship, a life you've built with real effort. It's less comfortable to admit how much of it was never actually under your own power to begin with.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind." — John 1:3-4 (NIV)

TENSION
“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” is about as total a claim as language allows — not most things, not the important things, but everything that exists, without exception. Then the text narrows suddenly, from cosmic scope to something intimate: “in him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” This is the same point John makes across his whole Gospel: the one through whom galaxies were made is the same Jesus his readers would go on to see hungry, exhausted, weeping at a friend's grave. The cosmic architect and the specific man asking for water at a well are one and the same subject, not two different figures loosely associated.
REFLECT
What have you been quietly claiming as something you made or sustained on your own, that this verse suggests was never actually independent of Him to begin with?
PRAYER
I've taken credit for things that were never fully mine to build. Thank You, Jesus, for being the source behind what I've called my own effort. Let me hold what I've made with open hands, knowing the life underneath it was always Yours first. Amen.
