There's a particular kind of joy in watching something finally grow again after a long stretch of just barely surviving — not just relief, but actual increase, actual momentum.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"He turned rivers into a desert... because of the wickedness of those who lived there. He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city... They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased." — Psalm 107:33-38 (NIV)

TENSION
This passage moves in both directions deliberately — fruitful land into desert because of wickedness, then desert into springs by mercy. The psalm doesn't pretend the barrenness was random or that consequence isn't real. But it lingers far longer on the reversal than the judgment: cities founded, fields sown, vineyards planted, numbers increasing. This isn't subsistence-level relief. It's flourishing that outpaces where things started. Notice, too: the people don't just get rescued from the desert — they build something durable there afterward. The story assumes rescue is supposed to lead somewhere generative, not just back to neutral.
REFLECT
Where has God turned a genuinely barren season of your life into something that's now actually flourishing — and have you noticed the increase, or just the relief?
PRAYER
Thank You for the specific place that used to be desert and isn't anymore. I don't want to just notice the relief and miss the increase — the actual growth, the actual harvest You've brought since. Keep building something durable out of what used to be barren ground. Let it be a city, not just a rescue. Amen.
