ANCHOR
There's a difference between forcing yourself to follow a rule you resent and doing something because you genuinely can't imagine wanting anything else. Most of us have spent a long time in the first category, gritting through obligation.
SCRIPTURE TEXT
"This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people... they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest." — Jeremiah 31:33-34 (NIV)

TENSION
The old covenant was written on stone — external, something to be checked against and obeyed from the outside. This one is written on the heart and mind — internal, native, no longer a rule you have to remember to consult but something built into how you actually think and want. That's a bigger claim than moral improvement; it's a claim about identity changing at the source, not just behavior being managed better. And the result isn't better rule-following — it's relationship: “I will be their God, and they will be my people... they will all know me.” The end goal was never obedience for its own sake. It was actual knowing, from the least of them to the greatest — meaning this isn't reserved for the spiritually elite. It's promised across the board.
REFLECT
Where are you still gritting through an external rule, that God is actually offering to write into what you genuinely want, from the inside?
PRAYER
I've spent a long time gritting through obligation instead of actually wanting what You want. Write this on my heart, not just my calendar or my conscience. I don't just want to follow the rule anymore — I want to know You, the way You said even the least of us could. Make this internal, Lord, not just something I check against. Amen.
